Four people, including two women, were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for their role in the abduction and killing of two Meitei students in Manipur in July. The suspects were taken "outside the State" by a special flight, and their children were detained and flown to Guwahati.

Four people, including two women, were detained in the hill district of Churachandpur, Manipur, in a meticulously planned operation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Manipur Police for their alleged involvement in the kidnapping and subsequent homicide of two Meitei students in July. Paominlun Haokip, S. Malsawm Haokip, Lhingneichong Baite, and Tinneilhing Henthang have been named as the inmates.

The administration, according to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, is steadfastly committed to seeing that those responsible for the crimes are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, possibly even the death penalty. One may flee after committing a crime, but they cannot avoid the long arms of the law, he said.
Furthermore, during the arrest operation, Ms. Lhingneichong's children, aged nine and 11, were temporarily taken into custody and later entrusted to the District Child Protection Officer of Assam's Kamrup Metro district.

The accused were promptly transported "outside the State" via a special flight, as indicated by Chief Minister Singh. The operation, which culminated in their arrest, saw substantial involvement from personnel of the Army, paramilitary units including the Border Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force, alongside the State police.

Contrarily, the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) contested the culpability of two of the apprehended suspects, asserting that Mr. Malsawm and Mr. Paominlun held no affiliations with militant factions nor were they connected to the aforementioned murder case. The KSO specified that they served as president and general secretary of KSO Leimata Block respectively.

The incident involving the two missing Meitei students, which transpired in July, culminated in the emergence of distressing images of their deceased bodies on social media, catalyzing widespread demonstrations and resulting in numerous injuries, predominantly among students.

This episode is one among the eleven cases involving women and children that were transferred to the CBI in July. A dedicated team of CBI officials, under the leadership of the agency's Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar, commenced the investigation into the killings on September 27.
On September 29, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey extended her condolences and support during her visit to the family members of the deceased, underlining the importance of swift and just resolution in such cases.

Regrettably, since May 3, ethnic clashes between the tribal Kuki-Zo and the Meitei community in Manipur have led to a tragic toll of at least 175 lives. The situation underscores the urgent need for sustainable peace-building efforts and comprehensive dialogue among the concerned parties to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens in the region. The state government, in tandem with relevant authorities, remains committed to fostering a secure and harmonious environment for its residents.
